UN demands “acceptable timeline” for civilian elections in Mali

Col. Assimi Goita

The United Nations (UN) has called for what it termed an acceptable timeline for the conduct of civilian elections in Mali.

According to UN Secretary General António Guterres it’s “absolutely essential” for Mali’s military leaders to announce an acceptable timeline for civilian elections.

Mr Guterres indicated that he was working with the West African regional bloc, Ecowas, and the African Union to create conditions that could allow Mali to adopt a reasonable position for a quick transition.

According to the United Nations chief, he also hoped to speak soon with the Malian government.

The military government of Col. Assimi Goita has announced a long delay to the elections originally planned for February.

The delay in holding the elections has forced ECOWAS to introduce tough sanctions on Mali including includes a range of trade sanctions and land and air border closures.

The European Union has also threatened to impose sanctions on Mali.
