Bill to toughen existing anti-gays laws rejected in Senegal

A bill introduced in Senegalese parliament which is intended to toughen current laws against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people has been rejected.

African Entertainment understands that the bill was to lengthened the prison term to a maximum of 10 years.

It was to lead to a threefold increase in the maximum fines.

Additionally, the bill was to criminalize LGBT and similar activities.

Gay sex is currently punishable by up to five years in jail.

The proposed bill was stopped by the Office of the National Assembly.

According to the Office of the National Assembly, the current law is clear and severely punishes homosexuality.

At least 11 Members of Parliament initiated the bill saying they had the backing of key religious groups.
