Unity Party evicted over $150,000 unpaid rent

The building serving as UP headquarters

A former ruling party of Liberia, Unity Party (UP) has been evicted from a building that serves as its national headquarters.

The Civil Law Court at the Temple of Justice ordered the eviction of UP from its Congo Town Headquarters in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia.

The Court arrived at the decision due to the Unity Party’s failure to settle US$150,000 rental fees.

In open court, lawyers of Unity Party – a political group on whose ticket former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf came to power – confessed that the party was indeed indebted to the McClain Enterprises, owner of the building serving as the headquarters of the Unity Party.

Following the lawyers’ confession, judge Kennedy Peabody of the Civil Law Court Judge, on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, held the Unity Party liable.

However, the judge reduced McClain Enterprises’ USD$ 250,000 demand for damages to USD$ 20,000.

After reducing the damages demanded, the judge then went on to evict the Unity Party which is currently the biggest opposition party in Liberia.

According to McClain Enterprises, the lease agreement between them and the Unity Party expired in 2018.

McClain Enterprises further indicated that up to July 2020, the Unity Party was owing an amount of US180,000 for three years, saying the party has since refused to pay the amount.

They informed the court that the indebtedness of Unity Party span July1, 2018 to July July 30, 2021 at the rate of US$60,000 per annum.
